For the Love of the Game

Henri Cartier-Bresson, the forefather of modern photojournalism, said that once you miss the moment it is gone forever; he was talking about small moments as well as the large.  This immediately sparked my interest in Sports photography, which is why I decided to explore the work of Walter Iooss. He started as a teenage freelancer and now has more than 300 photos that have appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Iooss is an incredible photographer who has virtually captured every major modern sports figure, but interestingly, some of his most revealing photographs of athletes are captured moments of not only the play itself, but the reflection of the play in the intimate moments before or after. Each image in his exhibits is accompanied by a personal story written by Iooss, which allows the viewer to connect with the subject being photographed. The photographs that I have selected display the action, techniques, and culture of different sports in order to interrelate both the small and large moments. My photo series will differ in the way that I was not able to get to know each athlete I photographed, but it will share the similarity of documenting the impulse that connects all athletes: a pure love of the sport.

This action shot demonstrates the athleticism that soccer requires. This photograph mainly captures the athletes structured form and the technique she uses in order to gain momentum to catch up to the ball.

This image shows the different techniques used by skateboarders in order to perform tricks. It is also part of the "skating" culture to be filmed so that the skater can go back and
re-watch himself so that he can perfect the stunt.

I really liked the colors of this image, but more importantly it truly represents the "skating" culture. Music is a must-have for most skateboarders because it relaxes the mood and sets a mellow vibe.

This photograph focuses on the main concept of golf: patience. This sport isn't fast-paced and it takes precision and concentration in order to be good. This image shows the athlete using different techniques that will help her successfully putt the ball into the hole.

This action shot displays the dancers amazing flexibility and uniform structure. Anyone can dance, but perfecting technique takes years of practice and a special talent.

This photograph demonstrates the athletes determination and motivation to get to the ball. Her pursuit to score is displayed in her facial expression and body language. It is up to the viewer to determine what happens next, since the outcome of every play is unpredictable.
